Tripura Chief Minister(CM) Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday(1st May) instructed the state police officials to take stringent action against the miscreants who allegedly attacked Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman, people aware of the development said. “Chief Minister Biplab instructed police officers to take stringent actions against the perpetrators who tried to attack Barman, leaving his driver and personal guard injured. He further spoke to the Director-General of Police of Tripura Police to take the needful actions,” revealed sources.

Tripura Police has stated that one person has been arrested in connection with the case so far. However, the identity of the arrested accused person is concealed and has not been disclosed to the media yet. Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman allegedly came under attack by some miscreants when he was visiting advocate Somik Deb at his residence in Agartala.

The Congress leader escaped unhurt in the alleged attack; however, his bodyguard and driver sustained injuries. “The state is going through complete lawlessness. The miscreants armed with sharp weapons attacked my driver suddenly. There were over 50 bike-borne people all hiding their faces by wearing helmets,” said the Congress leader who faced the alleged attack

According to Barman, the perpetrators snatched the weapon of his personal security guard. Both the injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment, and a case has been registered in the West Agartala police station. Congress leaders, including former MLA Ashish Kumar Saha, have earlier warned that the Congress party would organize street protests if people behind the attack on Mr. Barman’s personal security staff and driver were not arrested immediately.

He also informed that a Congress delegation that recently met the DGP demanded adequate security cover for the former health minister, who was dropped from Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s cabinet in charge of anti-party activities soon after the Lok Sabha elections in the year 2019.
